Class notes - October 23, 2007


  1. NO CLASS Thursday - You will be doing a writing exercise due next Tuesday in class and an opinion piece due that same day.
  2. Finish up the web review we started on Thursday afternoon.
  3. Some common sense safety measures....phishing, spam, advertising, web sites, data privacy.  What do we do in the name of convenience?
  4. Group discussion 
    1. Privacy Lost (the dark side of information accessibility)
    2. Privacy vs Convenience (what are we willing to give away)
    3. Nothing is private (an article that you have already seen once before)
    4. Round robin format (each person states his/her position or answer once before the group tries to come to a consensus decision).  No one else may speak until each person has had a turn.  Promotes active listening since you cannot be quick to jump in to contradict or agree.
    5. Answer the following questions based on the reading
      1. What do you value more (a value conflict in one of the pieces), privacy or convenience?
      2. List at least three ways in which you have given up some privacy for a service or convenience?  (Have group decide on the top 3 from among all that the individuals come up with.
      3. Based on the articles that you have read do you think you are in any potential danger (financial, physical or with regard to your future) based on information that you provide?
  5. Begin the "internet inventory".  (Use the digital drop box to save your work if you don't have a memory stick.
