CS 482 - Homework 1
Homework due date: Thursday, September 4th, 11:59 pm EDT
Deliverables: PDF document
This homework is worth 2% of your total grade.
The objective of this homework is to ensure that everything is in place for the
upcoming labs. To complete the homework, you need to perform
the following steps:
- Read the syllabus of the class, the
assignment schedule ,
and the submission guidelines .
- Make sure you have accounts for the Infosec lab and are able to start and access your VMs.
Read the instructions on how to connect to the lab. You will be contacted by the system administrator for your VPN and VM server accounts. There is a Linux virtual machine configured for you to use for your forensic analyses. The VM for you should be named "<userid>-forensic-workstation", where "userid" is your JMU eID. There will also be another VM that you need to use for Lab #1 (that VM will not be present until Lab #1 is actually assigned). You will not need that VM for this homework. The root password for the forensic workstation VM is 'forensics'. If you plan on setting up sshd so you can keep your VM running and connect to it directly, you need to change the root password or you risk that other students mess with your system! By default sshd is disabled for this reason. You can still use scp to transfer files between the workstation and other systems that run sshd.
Log in to the supplied forensic workstation virtual machine and execute the following two commands:
/usr/local/bin/ils -V
md5sum /usr/local/bin/ils
Include the output of the command in your homework submission.
- Transfer a file from your local computer to your forensic workstation. Describe the process you used for this.
- Generate a PDF write-up consisting of the following (have a separate section for each):
- A cover sheet as specified in the submission guidelines for the labs.
- The following text:
- I have read the syllabus, the assignment schedule, and the submission guidelines.
- I have read the JMU honor code and will adhere to it in this class.
- I have received an account in the Infosec lab and was successful in logging into the machine and starting VMWare.
- The full text of Paragraph B of the JMU Honor Code, "The Honor Code".
- The first sentence of "Forensic File System Analysis", Chapter 13.
It starts with "This is ..."
- The output from the commands above
- The description of how you transfered a file to your VM.
- Name your PDF file <your last name>-homework1.pdf, and submit the file
as your homework submission using Blackboard. This can be done through the
"Assignment submission" link in the course menu.
If you have any trouble accessing any of the reading material involved with this homework,
difficulties with the account, or generating the PDF file,
