Not surprisingly, the potential market for TIDE systems is enormous.
Indeed, there are currently 140 million passenger vehicles registered
in the US. Using other in-vehicle technologies as a guideline (such
as car phones and radar detectors), at a minimum one can expect that
20% of the vehicles registered in the US will be equipped with such a
system in the next 20 years. If the Computer and Electronics
Marketing Association's estimates are correct, in-vehicle navigation
products will be standard equipment in 50% of all new personal
vehicles in 7 years. In other words, between 28 million and 70
million such systems are likely to be sold in the next 7-20 years.
Thus, this is likely be a 1 to 10 billion dollar industry per year.
It is also not surprising that such systems will have enormous impacts
on the overall quality of life since transportation touches the lives
of everyone. TIDE technologies can reduce the amount of time that
people waste in their cars getting to/from work, shopping, etc...
(and the resulting tailpipe emissions); they can improve the transit
system (NJ Transit has 173 million riders annually); they can reduce
the number of secondary accidents, thereby making travel safer and
reducing insurance costs; and they can have an enormous impact on New
Jersey's economy (the trucking industry directly employs one out of
every 11 workers in the state). Hence, any technologies that reduce
travel time and/or reduce the number of vehicle miles of travel will
have an enormous impact on the State's economy and environment
(especially air quality).
