Types of Windows 2000 Certificate Authorities

Using Windows 2000, there are two types of Certificate Authorities that you can create. The two types of CAs are both available to install using packages of the Windows 2000 Cd-Rom.

Stand Alone Certificate Authority
  • For issuing certificates to users or computers outside a Windows 2000 domain.
  • Cannot be used for logon security.
  • Two subclasses:
    • Root
    • Subordinate
Enterprise Certificate Authority
  • An Enterprise Certificate Authority is used with a Windows 2000 Domain and Active Directory.
  • Requires entries of user in Active Directory in order to request certificate.
  • Can be used in logon security.
  • Two subclasses:
    • Root
    • Subordinate
