Techniques:
Desk Check - Examination of a work product, usually by the creator (e.g., proofreading)
Walkthrough - An informal examination of a work product by a team
Inspection - A formal examination of a work product by a trained team
Intent of Inspections
Find Defects:
Not correct them
Examine the Product:
Not evaluate the creator(s)
Roles During Inspections
Author:
Created the product
Moderator:
Schedules meetings, organizes materials, facilitates meetings, reports results, and monitors follow-up activities
Inspector:
Examines the product
Reader:
Guides the discussion (e.g., reads the document)
Recorder:
Records defects found, issues raised, and time spent
The Inspection Process
Readiness Check:
The Moderator performs a cursory review to ensure that the product is ready to be inspected
Overview "Meeting":
Provides necessary background information
Preparation:
Individual inspectors become informed
Inspection Meeting:
The Reader guides the Inspectors through the product, one piece at a time, the Inspectors identify defects, and the Recorder keeps notes
Rework:
If necessary, the product is modified
Follow Up:
If necessary, this may involve another inspection
