Analytic Research

Overview

Analytic Research

Our analytic research activities attempt to increase our understanding of the "goal-oriented sports" themselves. All of our analytic research activities are empirical and data-driven.

Unlike most other efforts in sports analytics, we do not focus on the application of machine learning. Instead, we focus on the application of network optimization models, network equilibrium models, spatial analysis models, and "classical" statistical models.

Properties of Successful Passes in Soccer

Pass Probabilities The probability that an attempted pass will be successful depends on a wide variety of factors. In this research we consider the way such things as the length of the pass, the direction of the pass, the velocity of the players, the characteristics of the passing lane, and the curvature of the pass impact the likelihood that it will be successful. This research is described in the following working paper:

Brause, S. and D. Bernstein (2019) "Properties of Successful Passes in Soccer", Computer Science Department, James Madison University.
