Lecture 10 - September 27^th 2007

We looked at a number of Pascal programs dealing with

· files

· strings

· arithmetic

We discussed

• the causes of compilation errors
• output produced
• formatting output
• the DIV operator vs the / operator
• how to declare an array of strings
• how to define your own string type

These programs are linked from the Web page and some explanatory comments have been added to them.

We discussed the static scope rules (from Chapter 5) of

• Pascal - who has access to variables declared locally and non locally
• FORTRAN - each subroutine or function is like a walled object which only communicates with other parts of the program through the parameter list. The exception to this is when a COMMON statement is used. Note that we have not studied the use of COMMON statements.

FirstPascal programs must be submitted electronically by 11:59pm, Monday, October 1^st. Folders with printouts are due at the start of class on Tuesday, October 2^nd. Those submitting early enough to earn the 20 point bonus can turn their printouts in with the rest of the class (i.e. they do not have to turn the printouts in early). Make sure that all code is easily readable (i.e. dark enough) and does not wrap around to avoid penalty points.
