Assignment #17
Due November 9th
First things
first: The problem number 9a in exercise set 4.1 is
graded correctly. The relation x ρ y « x is at least as tall as y is not anti-symmetric. Their heights are equal but the set is the set of people not
the set of heights. Thus, the relation that x is at least as tall as y (person x
is at least as tall as person y), and the relation that y is at least as tall as x (person y is at
least as tall as person x) can be true
but their truth (that these two people have this relation) does make these two
people equal. Sorry for not seeing this
clearly in class – even when Amy pointed it out.
Second: I promised you the solution to problem 53
from exercise set 3.5
There
are 43 red balls; 27 green balls; and 8 blue balls for a total of 78
balls. Therefore the probability of
selecting a red ball is 43/78; the probability of selecting a green ball is
27/78; and the probability of selecting a blue ball is 8/78. This makes the expected value in dollars
( 3*43
+ 6* 27 + 10*8)/78 or (129 + 162 + 80) /78 or $371/78 or
≈$4.75
Third: In reviewing the first exam it appears that there
were questions from: Sections:
1.1 |
1.2 |
1.3 |
1.4 |
and
3.1 |
3.2 |
3.3 |
3.4 |
Since
then we have covered:
2.1 |
2.2 |
|
2.4 |
and
3.5 |
3.6 |
4.1 |
4.2 |
|
4.4. |
So
this second exam will focus on those sections.
